Girl sitting in the dunes

Oil on panel:24 x 40 cm        1880-1890

A small panel by Jozef Israels  (1824-1911) in the tradition of the The Hague School of which he was a founding member. A girl sits on top of a dune looking out over the North Sea. The water is calm, there are some clouds overhead and on the horizon the sails of two ships are visible. Is she waiting for the return of a loved one or is it a moment of peace in her otherwise busy day? The story is up to the spectator. The style is impressionistic. The composition well balanced with the dark greens up front to widen into a calm light blue sea. The subject of women looking out over sea is a favourite with Jozef Israels.
